Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the case" and have requested to the public for information.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism rendered him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
