The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.
This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.
The police intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
