On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
